As high school students begin to narrow their focus regarding which college to attend and what to major in, it’s critical that they understand how their desired major translates into a career. The B.U.O.Y. Business & Leadership Program is designed to give high school students an in-depth look at the functional business units of major corporations.

During the week our scholars will interact with corporate executives from major corporations such as GE Healthcare, ACL Laboratories, Sherman Hospital and Heartland Blood Centers.  Our primary goal for the site visits  is to offer students an opportunity to see science, technology, engineering and math applied in real world situations that impact their lives. Students often complain that they don’t see how math or science are relevant.  We want to show them that STEM is not only relevant but that the jobs in STEM-intensive fields are attainable and interesting.

Specifically, the program allows students to gain an in-depth understanding of corporate business processes and how STEM intersects. Student’s STEM and Business aptitude is developed through a combination of lecture and employee-facilitated case studies and/or projects.

Areas of focus include: finance, accounting, sourcing, life sciences, Fitness and Wellness, Nutrition Services, and research and development. At the conclusion of the program we want the students to understand each of these service areas and business processes and be able to envision themselves as professionals in these areas.

 Program Outcomes/Deliverables

After participating in our program scholars will be able to answer the following questions:

  • What does XYZ Corporation Do?
    • What are their product/service deliverables?
  • How do they meet those deliverables?
  • What role does STEM play in XYZ Corporation’s business operations?
  • What is XYZ Corporation’s biggest operating challenge(s)?
  • How does XYZ Corporation overcome that challenge(s)?
  • What specific things should I be doing now to prepare myself for a career at XYZ Corporation in the future?
